An August sunset in The Heartland
It was a hot summer day with a few withered tree leaves lying on the ground
just as a reminder. The sun still was hot....even at sunset. The grass
was growing. The bugs were humming. The dog laid on the nearby ground...quiet
and still. It was an August sunset along The Lincoln Trail. For the moment,
peace was all around and the daily worries took a back seat. It was a magical
time when a "healing" might occur or a miracle might happen.
As I sat on the old-time metal rocking chair a voice
startled me. It was the Sage approaching from the rear. A welcome friend....a
companion to share this special time. I opened the conversation with my
thought that we seem to cherish the "special times" more than we did when
we were young. We seem to find our best experiences become mental photos
that we crave to hold on to.
The Sage agreed with a subtle nod as he gathered a
few small sticks and "bunched them up for kindling. He was preparing to
start the fire...to complete that perfect mental image. It was a sunset
in August with a small campfire ready to meet the cool air after the sun
completed it's retreat. It was a dream my father would have enjoyed...a
dream he often sought but rarely found. "In a way", I added, "...I think
I'm living the dream my father sought but never really reached".
"And there you are...you thought you were free to
live your life as an independent agent and now you learn that even in your
"Golden Years"
you are still fulfilling the dreams of childhood." The Ol' Sage laughed
as he added that so many of our joys link back to childhood.
"So many of our joys involve building and rebuilding
on those childhood memories. Even in The Golden years, your father continues
to share with you. Through you, some of his most cherished dreams are
still coming true. It is a part of the process of fulfillment that pleases
you and those you still love. It's a special gift....this art of living
a portion of our lives within a childhood framework of memories."
And, it happened here today along The Lincoln
Trail!
