-A look at The ChalleNGe Program

The Illinois ChalleNGe  program began 14 years ago.  It just recently graduated the 10,000th cadet at The Springfield Convention Center this past December. The ChalleNGe Program includes a five and a  half month residential experience.  Eligible participants must be between the ages of 16 and 19...and, seek to complete their G.E.D..

Understanding The ChalleNGe Program and its contribution to this community:

In most neighborhoods, we deal with some young adults who press the limits, break the law and seek mind numbing options (all of which are illegal). We lock the worst youths up and try to discourage the rest. We believe these options alone are not enough.  For a few of those off track young adults, The Lincoln's ChalleNGe Academy Program can restore motivation and put that young person back “on track” to success.  It can turn a percentage of young adults around from “losers” to productive tax-payers.

The Lincoln's ChalleNGe program, operated by Illinois National Guard, is paid for with federal and state funding. The Challenge programs in other states are operated by each state's National Guard. It is a program for both men and women.  Its strength rests in its voluntary residential/military participation. It does not cure a broken spirit but it does offer a ladder to success, which each cadet can climb.

There are some young men and women who have been damaged by others, by their community, by family tragedy, or, who have opened the door to chemical dependency. There are psychologically defeated youth, which find no reason to restore their lives because of emotional trauma or personal loss. And, there are a few others who have stumbled onto roads that they seem unable to escape from. The ChalleNGe Program can give these young adults who are off-track, a way back “winners life” with physical fitness, mental alertness and emotional stability. The program can free the cadet from a failing past and a defeated heart. There are many young adults who could be assisted by the Challenge Program in their personal efforts to restore their own lives.

A few key issues in the Lincoln's \ChalleNGe Academy Program include:
1.  It's always a voluntary experience so, the results will always belong to the cadet.
2.  It's the first step in the restoration process...walking away from the old life.
3.  It's a military experience...it's not therapy, jail or punishment.
4.  During the initial first two weeks of the program, some of the young adults will choose to leave.
6.  Graduates will have had the opportunity to earn their G.E.D.  They will have seen vocational opportunities, tested their personal skills and, possibly, be selected for a paid tuition college program.
